Sami Ollila from Upcast Oy: I appreciate Lingo’s excellent service attitude
As a manufacturer of industrial machinery, Upcast includes detailed operating manuals in every project delivery. Having a reliable translation partner is an essential part of ensuring project success.
Upcast manufactures upward casting lines where copper cathodes or scrap copper are processed into copper rods or tubes. “We supply large production lines to our customers at the upstream end of their production. For example, in copper cable production, 8 mm copper rod cast on the Upcast upward casting line can be used as raw material, which customers then further process by drawing it thinner using equipment from other suppliers,” explains Sami Ollila, who has worked as a project manager at Upcast for 15 years.
Upcast has delivered projects in Europe, South and North America, and occasionally in Asia, Africa, and Australia. In addition to new casting lines, the company also supplies update projects, spare parts and consumables to its customers.
“As a project manager, I oversee virtually all of our projects. This year, there are around a dozen of them.”
Operating instructions must be accurate and reliable in every language
Every Upcast casting line delivery comes with operating and installation manuals. For lines delivered within Europe, these manuals are translated into the official language of the country where the line will be used. For many years, the manuals have been translated by Lingo.
“In most cases, the manuals are translated into languages we don’t speak ourselves, practically every language except English. It’s important for us to be able to trust that the translations are accurate.”
The manuals include important safety warnings related to machine operation. Therefore, clear and precise translations are vital for overall machine safety.
“Reliable translations of operating and installation instructions contribute to machine safety. Customers have given positive feedback on the translations provided by Lingo. The language is clear and easy to understand.”
While a translator of manuals is not required to have in-depth technical knowledge of the specific field, experience in translating technical instructions and a solid general understanding of technology are essential.
“The target language glossary is usually provided by the customers. This ensures the accuracy of industry-specific technical terms.”
Collaboration with Lingo is easy and efficient
Since the content of documents to be translated is finalised toward the end of each project, close to delivery, it’s essential that the translation is carried out quickly and efficiently. According to Ollila, working with Lingo is easy and seamless.
“A service-minded attitude and smooth workflow are really important to us. Lingo delivers on both: they are easy to work with, respond promptly, and complete tasks thoroughly and efficiently.”
As a project manager, Ollila values reliable and long-term partnerships that help him succeed in his role.
“With Lingo, we know each other’s ways of working and can be quickly reached by phone and email if needed.”
The delivery of a production line is always a holistic package, with the physical machine being just one, though essential, component. Equally significant is, for instance, the support provided to the customer in installing and operating the equipment.
“Every piece of documentation shapes the customer’s perception of us. I believe the operating manual, whether on the customer’s shelf or in their files, serves as a calling card for our company. Carefully prepared and translated manuals contribute to the image of us as a reliable partner,” says Ollila.
He highly recommends Lingo to other companies as well.
“Based on my own experience, I highly recommend Lingo to industrial machinery manufacturers and other companies whose activities involve preparing and providing operating manuals to customers in foreign languages.”
