Hanna Kallio from Nuorisopassi: “I appreciate Lingo’s directness and reliability”
Nuorisopassi is the most widely used welfare app for young people in Finland. It enables cities, municipalities and other actors to provide sports and cultural services and related benefits to young people in their regions. “Currently, the application is in use in almost 30 municipalities and the application is used by more than 30,000 young people,” says Hanna Kallio, CEO of Otium Innovations Oy, the company that maintains and develops the application.
According to Kallio, Finnish municipalities want to invest in the wellbeing of young people. The Nuorisopassi mobile app strongly supports this goal. At the same time, the app’s user data provides municipalities with important information on how the services they provide reach young people.
Multilingual target group and other translation needs
Nuorisopassi’s target group is multilingual, so the application must be multilingual as well. Kallio’s team relied on Lingo’s help for the translation of the user interface texts and other text content of the application. “All the texts shown to the user of the app have been translated into Swedish and English at Lingo.”
The application’s commercial potential outside Finland has also been studied. “Lingo provided us with translations of the app’s sales materials for the German and Swedish markets.”
For some municipal customers, Otium Innovations maps and acquires new benefits to offer in the app as an additional service. This work, which is usually carried out twice a year, also makes use of the services of a tried and tested translation agency. Lingo and Nuorisopassi also collaborate on the translation of marketing materials for the app. “The need for translations is constant, but not quite weekly and not necessarily monthly,” says Kallio.
A reliable partner
Kallio praises Lingo as a straightforward and reliable translation agency. “Lingo always takes care of our occasional translation jobs. They propose a timetable and then stick to it. It gives a nice, confident feeling.”
Why does Kallio use the translation agency, even with today’s smart, AI-assisted translation tools? “If you don’t have the language skills, I don’t think you should spend your time translating. The end result is likely to be poor, and the time spent will certainly be more than that of a professional translator. If you want your work to convey a professional image, you should also rely on professionals in the field for translations. They have a better understanding of the tones, styles, contexts and vocabulary of a foreign language. I’d rather trust them than try it myself and fail, in the worst case without knowing it.”
